The new book from Steve Manatt

You Were Made
to be Known.

If your calendar is full but your soul feels alone, you're not the only one. Red Letter Relationships follows one thread through everything Jesus said, back to the connection God designed you for: with Him, and with the people already in your path.

Sound familiar?

Loneliness has learned to hide in plain sight.

A calendar that's always full, and a phone that never stops buzzing.

A hundred birthday wishes on a screen, and not a single call.

A church lobby where everyone knows your name, and no one knows your week.

A marriage that looks fine from the outside while something underneath quietly cracks.

Researchers call it crowded loneliness: being surrounded and still unseen. It isn't an accident, and it isn't a personal failure. It's a deliberate strategy to keep you isolated, and it starts losing its grip the moment you can name it.

About the book

Every red letter points the same direction.

Most of us read the words of Jesus as a list of topics: money, prayer, worry, the end of the age. Steve Manatt read them that way for years, until he noticed the thread running underneath all of them.

When Jesus spoke, He was always talking about relationship. Your relationship with God. Your relationships with people. And the way those two are woven so tightly together that you can't strengthen one without the other growing too.

Through honest stories, Steve shows what that thread looks like in real life and how God uses it to make you someone worth knowing.

This isn't another “ought-to” for your list. It's a new way of seeing what's really important.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind… Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Matthew 22:37, 39 NIV

One command, two directions: up toward God and out toward people. Learn to see it everywhere you look.

The journey

Four stages. One thread.

Real connection doesn't start with trying harder. It starts with God reaching first, then grows outward, from Him, through you, to the people around you.

  1. 01

    He Initiates

You don't have to earn your way in. God reached toward you before you knew to reach back, and no history is too broken for Him to work with.

  2. 02

    We Are Formed

Love, patience, kindness, self-control: God grows all of it in you, not just the parts that come naturally. Your part is staying close while He works.

  3. 03

    Reflecting His Light

What God forms in you is meant to be seen. You'll start noticing the people already in your path, including the ones hiding behind a full calendar and a quick smile.

  4. 04

    Making a Difference

Your hardest seasons aren't disqualifications. They're credentials. Someone in the dark is waiting for a person who has been there and made it through.

What's inside

  1. 1

    Milestones of Maturity

How one phone call at Christmas exposed the thin line between surrounded and alone.

  2. 2

    Crowded and Still Lonely

Naming the loneliness that hides in full calendars and busy church lobbies.

  3. 3

    Becoming Someone Worth Knowing

Why wanting closeness and being ready for it are two very different things.

  4. 4

    The Posture That Changes Everything

The difference between performing humility and actually living it.

  5. 5

    The Gem and the Light

One stone, nine facets: seeing the fruit of the Spirit with fresh eyes.

  6. 6

    The Quality of the Stone

What a jeweler looks for first, and what God is forming underneath the surface.

  7. 7

    The Setting

How the way God designed you carries His light into ordinary days.

  8. 8

The Person Right in Front of You

Learning to notice the way Jesus noticed, and meeting the “valley-goers.”

  9. 9

    You Are Someone's Way Out

The fear nobody warns you about, and why it's lying to you.

  10. 10

Which Is Why I Reached Out

One phone call, forty-five minutes, and the simplest next step you'll ever take.

Skeptical? Good. The appendix tests the book's central claim against four of the hardest sayings of Jesus, including the one where Steve's first answer didn't hold up.

After learning they couldn't have children, Steve and his wife pulled away from almost everyone. Then one Sunday, a pastor crossed the church lobby, said nothing at all, and simply held on.

“I had been seen with the eyes of Jesus and my burden felt less heavy.”

From Chapter 8, The Person Right in Front of You

Early praise

“This book is needed.”

“From the opening pages, I felt myself pulled into the beauty of the message. Jesus prioritized relationships above all else and so must we… It's not another ‘ought-to’ item for our to-do lists, another heavy lift, just a simple change in perspective… This book is needed. I intend to read it at least once a year.”

Linda SlatonAuthor of Embracing Purpose and There's More

“Relationships are often transactional and shallow, especially for the men. I see it daily in my practice… Steve Manatt reminds us of the One who lived for relationships and challenges us to discover the richness of life that relationships bring.”

Bill J. ReedFounder, Navigation Strategies: Career & Life Coaching for Men

Simple. Just not easy.

You don't need a program or the perfect words, just the willingness to see the person in front of you and reach out in love.

About the author

Steve Manatt

Steve Manatt is a husband, father, and churchman who has spent decades learning what it takes to build relationships that last, with God and with the people He places in our path. His faith came alive in college, when a friend opened the door to a dorm-room Bible study and invited him in. That friendship launched a lifetime of discipleship.

He has served his local church as a leader and teacher, and he and his wife have walked through valleys and high places of their own, many of which appear in these pages. Red Letter Relationships is his first book, written not from a platform but from a life spent noticing that God's richest blessings tend to arrive in the form of people.
